Acne, Pimples, Zits
Acne is dominantly hormonal in nature and is caused by change in hormones which cause an increase in production of sebum (oil). This sebum along with dead skin cells blocks hair follicles. This environment is great for naturally occurring bacteria in skin to multiply, causing inflammation and acne.
Acne can present itself as comedones (black heads, white heads), red bumps, painful bumps, cysts. Typically acne is most seen on face, chest, back etc. where sebaceous glands (oil glands) are abundant.
Acne dominantly occurs from 15- 45 years of age group with a peak during teenage. It is sometimes even seen in neonates (babies) due to circulating maternal hormones.
It can get aggravated by certain conditions like
- Stress
- Hot and humid environment
- Hormonal Imbalance Conditions
- Application of oil or oil based products
- Certain oral medications
Treatment
A medical expert normally will generate a systematic treatment plan based on one's skin and severity of the condition.
Oral medications : Including antibiotics and vitamin A derivatives.
Topical Creams
Medical Peels / Chemical Peels : For acne as well as scars.
Dermaroller / Micro-Needling / Dermapen : For Acne Scars
Dermal Fillers : For Acne Scars
More often than not it is a combination of the above which works best.In addition to an immediate and obvious deterioration in cosmetic appearance, cystic and hard acne leaves behind scars and marks. Even picking or squeezing of acne causes more marks and scarring. It is seen that this deterioration in cosmetic appearance often leads to a lower self-esteem and lack of confidence in young patients.

What to apply on pimples?
"The first thing is to not apply any home remedies, these tend to damaged the skin and inflame acne even more. One needs to understand that acne is the result of hormonal changes which causes an increase in sebum (oils) which leads to bacterial inflammation.
So the topical medications that are designed to work on acne work towards two goals, the first to reduce the sebum levels and second to ensure that bacterial growth is contained. This in effect supresses acne."

When should I see a dermatologist for acne treatment?
Although culturally we often see acne as a simple thing that happens to a lot of people, we often fail to realize that acne or pimples can have long term effects on the skin leaving behind serious marks and scars. Hence I personally recommend that in case during puberty or during young adulthood if a person has the propensity for acne / pimple it is best o show the same to a dermatologist who can help create a preventive routine for the person.
