Medical Peels (Chemical Peels)

Proven, Scientific, Versatile

What are
Chemical Peels?

The fundamental principle of skin peeling has been employed since ancient times. It is said that Cleopatra used to bathe in sour milk, which made her skin very beautiful. Of course, we now know that it was the lactic acid in the milk which helped the process of beautification.

The idea behind skin peeling is to carry out a controlled injury to the skin such that when the skin heals, it becomes a lot more supple and clear. This process of controlled injury to the skin by use of medical solutions is called skin peeling and the solutions themselves are called Chemical or Medical Peels.

The name Peels are used to denote that the skin peels after a treatment but this not entirely true. In reality most peels are very gentle and cause at maximum gentle exfoliation.

Who is Chemical Peels
suitable for?

If you are concerned about the texture of your skin or its elasticity and have any of the below conditions, Chemical Peels Treatment may be suitable for you.

If you are concerned about skin pigmentation and darkening and have any of the below conditions, Chemical Peels Treatment may be suitable for you.

If you are concerned about signs of ageing showing on your face and have any of the below conditions, Chemical Peels Treatment may be suitable for you.

There are chemical peels which act more on the superficial levels which can help clear up dead skin cells and undlog the pores of the skin, which in turn reduces bacterial growth. Also there are chemical peels available which are deep acting and can help improve cellular turnover and cause a peeling action. After healing of the skin there is seen to be a marked reduction in acne scars. However multiple sessions are needed to see such substantial results.

The most common reasons why patients seek full body skin rejuvenation are:

  1. Chronic Generalized (wide spread) dry and dull skin
  2. Generalized spread of marks and spots on large parts of the body like back etc. because of acne and other conditions.
  3. Generalized darkening of skin or tanning because of sun exposure
  4. Need for improving the overall texture and elasticity of the skin.
What are the Types of
Chemical Peels?

The peels are largely classified by how deep they can penetrate the layers of the skin. The loose classification is:
Superficial Peels, Medium Deep Peels, Deep Peels
Obviously, the deeper a peel penetrates, the greater the effect. However, please note that not all peels are suitable for all patients and all conditions. Hence, it is recommended that any form of skin peeling is done only under the close supervision of an experienced dermatologist.

But, for quick reference, here are some of the common and not-so-common peels that are used, and the advantages one can expect from each of them:

  1. Alpha Hydroxy Peels – These are the mildest form of peels. These work towards making the skin tone even and generating a ‘glow’.
  2. Beta Hydroxy Peels – These are largely used for acne.
  3. Retinoid Peels – These are used for clearing up the skin and achieving an even skin tone.

  1. Combination Peels – These include medium deep peels, and their usage is best determined by a dermatologist on a case to case basis.
  2. TCA Peels – For deep pigmentation patches, a dermatologist may choose these types of peels. These are also medium deep peels and should be handled carefully.
  3. Phenolic Peels – These are very deep peels and not commonly used.

Warning: Never use any form of peels by yourself, or without the supervision of a trained dermatologist.

Learn More About
Medical Peels

The procedure itself is quite simple and relaxing. The aesthetician will carry out a deep cleaning of the treatment area and then apply the peel solution, which will be left on for the specified time (generally a few minutes, as directed by the dermatologist), and then clean the same. The patient feels a mild stinging sensation when the peel is applied. The procedure is generally ended with a cleansing and hydration process.

All creams should be stopped for a few days before and after the procedure.
Pre and post-procedure, there should be no prolonged sun exposure.
Avoid any beauty procedures for a few days before and after the procedure.
Scrubbing and rubbing of treated area should be avoided.
Avoid using makeup and other beauty products on the treated area for up to 2 days after the procedure.
Waxing and threading should be avoided for up to a week after the procedure

Over the next few days, based on the peel used, there may be a visible residual redness of the skin, or even actual peeling of the skin in some cases. But this is to be expected, as it is a part of the rejuvenation process.

The best results of a peel are seen from the next day (for milder peels) to the next week (for stronger peels). The end result is an improvement of skin health where the skin feels fresh and more supple with a reduction in the condition being treated, be it pigmentation, scars, acne or any of the others mentioned.

However, like most beauty procedures, peels are an additive process. If applied regularly, then with every session there is an incremental improvement. And yes, before too long, you will see a visible transformation.

Based on the expected results and the condition being treated, Dr. Sejal recommends a frequency varying from twice a month to once in three months.

Modern dermatology has made the process of skin peeling a lot more efficient and safer. The solutions used now have been rigorously tested by the companies that produce them, for both efficacy and safety.

Although the procedure is generally very safe, I recommend that peels be done by trained aestheticians only and under the watchful eye of a qualified dermatologist.

Also, a common myth with peels is that once you stop using them, the treated area turns darker. This is absolutely untrue and any darkening observed is generally because of prolonged sun exposure.

Rest assured, skin peeling is among the most widely used procedures by dermatologists for the purpose of skin rejuvenation.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are practically no side effects of this treatment. There may be a mild redness or tenderness in the treated area which will automatically subside in 48 hours.

Like all skin rejuvenation procedures, the longevity of the results depends on how one takes care of their skin. In case of non protected exposure to sunlight and pollution the results of chemical peels tends to go away. It is best to protect your skin from environmental factors such that there is a control in pigmentation and oxidative stress on the skin.

This is an absolute myth. There is no degradation in the condition of your skin in case one stops any skin rejuvenation treatment.

The recommended period between two chemical peel treatments in 30 days at minimum. However in some cases where combination peels are used, the recommended time frame can be dropped to 15 days by your dermatologist.

This is a simple procedure in which case the only care needed is adequate protection from sun and to avoid any other treatments to skin. One can go back to their regular activity immediately after the treatment.

The chemical peels in question are medical grade peels applied under the supervision of a trained dermatologist. These also work on the superficial layers of the skin and hence do not bring about any constitutional change in your skin.

Most people experience a mild stinging or burning sensation during the procedure. However, the sensation is usually tolerable and subsides quickly. Your dermatologist may apply a cooling gel or fan to help alleviate any discomfort.

The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes, but the duration can vary depending on the type of chemical peel you are undergoing. Your dermatologist will inform you about the expected duration before starting the procedure.

Chemical peels can be done on most skin types, but it is important to consult with a dermatologist to determine if the procedure is right for you. People with certain skin conditions, such as eczema or rosacea, may not be good candidates for chemical peels.

Your dermatologist will provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Generally, you will need to avoid waxing, shaving, or using any exfoliating products on the treated area for a few days before the procedure. You should also avoid exposure to the sun and use sunscreen regularly.

Oxygen Facial

An Oxygen facial (also called CO2 facial) works towards improving the metabolism of skin cells and increasing the collagen levels in your skin by a phenomenon called Bohr’s effect. This is the phenomenon in which by generating CO2 on the outer layer of skin, there is an increase in the O2 levels in the deeper layers of the skin. The increase in oxygen improves cell growth and cell biosynthesis leading to a better, younger looking skin.
