HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound waves to focus energy on the deep dermal layer and Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) tissue.
This energy induces a controlled damage to the targeted skin cells by raising their temperature instantaneously. This further prompts the body to repair the skin cells by producing collagen and elastin, whereby improving the skin’s elasticity and structure from within. The final result is a natural lifting and tightening of skin.
HIFU is often called a Non Invasive Facelift
HIFU is mainly used for two reasons
HIFU can be used to selectively target certain areas of the face to contour the face naturally without the need for using dermal fillers.

While ultrasound imaging is very common, the use of focused ultrasound wave for remodelling the fat cells and collagen under the skin has also been done for many years now and thousands of patients have undergone these procedures.
A HIFU machine with its probe, focuses the ultrasound waves into a ‘pin point’. This allows the HIFU energy to penetrate deeper into the fat or SMAS layers of the skin and heat up the cells in that layer without affecting the superficial layers of the skin.
When the HIFU energy is used with a liposonix probe, the energy is focused on the fat cells which destroys the fat cells. These are then disposed off through the lymphatic system of the body over a period of 4 to 8 weeks. Such a procedure can be used for simple fat loss or for shaping the jawline etc.
When the HIFU is used with a regular probe, it targets the cells in the SMAS layer and heats them up. This leads to a process of stimulating collagen generation in the skin and hence tightening the skin.
Based on the needs of the patient, the correct HIFU probe is chosen by Dr. Sejal and the face or the area to be treated is marked with grid lines to ensure accurate energy delivery.
A cooling gel is applied and the treatment is started where the HIFU probe is placed in direct contact with the skin through th gel and ‘shots’ are given.
The procedure may require used of different HIFU probes based on the area being treated and also sometimes multiple passes are done on certain areas to achieve specific results.
The face is finally cleaned and a soothing mask is applied, followed by a final application of sunscreen and moisturizer.
Probably the best thing about this procedure is that there is virtually no down time. However similar to any skin procedure, it is advisable to take a few precautions like:
– Do not be out in the sun for long durations. Avoid direct sun exposure where possible for up to 24 hours.
– Do not apply any serums or creams for two days after the procedure.
– Do not use a face wash or soap on face for 24 hours after the procedure.
– Apply only sunscreen and moisturizers for two days.
– Avoid any other form of salon procedures like facials, skin bleaching etc. for a week after your procedure.
– Avoid any steam, sauna and facial massages for a period of 7 days after procedure.
– The treated area may get redness and swelling which will settle by itself in 2 to 3 days.
– Apply the prescribed ointment or cream for 2 days, as directed by the doctor.
A HIFU procedure affects the inner layers of the skin and hence results cannot be expected immediately. For HIFU to show effects, it may take a minimum of 4 to 8 weeks. Based on the treatment area and expectations the results may be as below:
1. For regular HIFU treatment of face, one will experience tightening of loose skin along with a reduction in fine lines, folds and wrinkles. There is a gentle lift visible on the face.
2. For LIposonix treatment, based on the area that is treated, there should be a reduction in fat in these areas and if so desired then a better defined structure.

HIFU used ultrasound waves for remodelling of collagen and fat and hence is one of the safest procedures around. It is non invasive in nature which means that there is no chance of any type of infection etc.
It takes about 4 to 8 weeks for effects HIFU to be visible. Also the effects are additive in nature, which means that the results improve with multiple sessions of the procedure. However when the procedures are stopped the skin goes back to its natural ageing profile and starts becoming lax again at a natural rate as it would without any treatment.
