What Happens When We
Age?

As we age our cellular metabolism becomes weaker. That is as you age your body loses its ability to generate healthy cells at the same rate at which cells die. This is one of the fundamental reasons for the manifestation of signs of ageing.

– The upper layers of our skin and the blood vessels in the skin start becoming thinner, leading to easy bruising

– The proteins (elastin, collagen etc.) that connect and support the skin cells also reduce, leading to a loss of elasticity in the skin and eventually to wrinkles.

– Also the Sebaceous glands on your skin start producing less oil as you age, contributing to dryer skin and the prominence of fine lines.

– Moreover, the subcutaneous fat that helps keep skin plump and smooth, shifts and redistributes with age, resulting in volume loss and changes in facial contours.

– Your bones too have a role in your ageing appearance. As we age, bone resorption can occur, especially around the jawline and cheekbones, leading to changes in facial structure.

– The skin can develop unwanted growths and patches like skin tags and liver spots.

Know More About
Anti Ageing Treatments

Skin like all organs of your body can be made healthy with the right lifestyle choices and a bit of work.

Skin rejuvenation for aged skin should include the following things at minimum:

1. An at home skin care routine that helps you protect and rejuvenate your skin everyday with the correct skin care products.

2. A basic set of healthy lifestyle choices like reduction of smoking and drinking or getting adequate sleep and relaxation.

3. A proper course of skin rejuvenation procedures under the care of an expert dermatologist.

Non Invasive Skin Rejuvenation means procedures or techniques done from the surface of the skin without any form of surgery. It involves as combination of advanced machines, topical skin care products and medications. Technologies used by include Lasers, Ultrasound, RF etc. While topical applications may include use of skin care products that help hydration, pigmentation, texture etc.

These are the simplest of skin rejuvenation procedures and should ideally be started when you first start showing signs of ageing.

Skin resurfacing with procedures like microneedling, MNRF (Microneedling Radio Frequency), and fractional laser helps with aging skin in several ways:

Stimulating Collagen Production: These treatments trigger the skin’s natural healing process, leading to increased collagen and elastin production, which are key to maintaining skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Reducing Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By promoting new skin cell growth, these procedures help in smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.

Improving Skin Texture and Tone: They can reduce the appearance of age spots, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, leading to more even skin tone and texture.

Non-invasive facelifting with High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) works by targeting deep layers of the skin with ultrasound energy. This energy generates heat at specific points beneath the skin, stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. The increase in collagen results in a gradual tightening and lifting of the skin, leading to a more youthful appearance. HIFU effectively targets areas such as the jawline, neck, and cheeks, and the procedure requires no surgery or downtime, making it a popular choice for non-invasive facial rejuvenation.

Injectable treatments with Botox and fillers help with signs of aging in distinct ways:

Botox: It relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (caused by muscle movement) such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles, preventing the formation or deepening of wrinkles.

Fillers: These are used to restore lost volume and plump up areas that have become sunken or hollow due to aging. Fillers can smooth out static wrinkles (not related to muscle movement), enhance lips, and improve facial contours, leading to a more youthful appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately there are a lot of false negative stereotypes associated with wrinkle reduction and face lifting treatments. These are generally untrue. The fact is that all of these procedures are done in such a way so as to create a very gentle facelift. Also the placement of injectable treatments is such that the reduction in wrinkles looks absolutely natural and your face does not look pulled or stretched in any way.

Results of some of the procedures like HIFU and Skin resurfacing are additive in nature. Hence with every session there is an improvement in the condition. While for procedures like botox and dermal fillers the results are instantaneous but have a definitive lifetime. Example in case of dermal fillers the results last between 1 year and 2 years at most, after which the procedure would need to be repeated to maintain results.

This is an absolute myth. There is no degradation in the condition of your skin in case one stops any skin rejuvenation treatment.

Every procedure has a set frequency which needs to be followed in case the same is to be repeated to improve upon results. For most non invasive procedures this period is between 3 and 6 weeks. For invasive procedures like dermal fillers and threads the time duration maybe longer between 6 months and 2 years based on the exact treatment.

Most non invasive and injectable treatments have no down time and one can return to daily activities immediately after the procedure. For some minimally invasive procedures like threads, it may take upto 72 hours for any localized swelling or redness to disappear.

While these techniques are generally safe for most people. Dr. Sejal will still take a full medical history to rule out potential risks. There are some procedure which are not suitable for certain groups of people. As an example dermal fillers and botox are not suitable for gestating women. Also procedures like CO2 laser skin resurfacing maynot be suitable for diabetics and so on.

If anti ageing creams and supplements are prescribed by a doctor after due examination and discussion, as a part of your skin or hair care routine then these can be considered safe. However using over the counter creams and supplements can lead to unknown complications and should be avoided.

As you age your cell metabolism slows down and the effects of environment and lifestyle choices also start showing on your skin. To prevent such damage it is best to start on a basic skin care routine of using moisturizers and sunscreens in your late teens. This skin care routine can then be augmented with certain skin care products by your dermatologist based on your exact concerns as they arise with time and age.

Certain basic skin care procedures like microdermabrasion and medical skin cleanup are recommended from early 20s to ensure that there is no build up of dust, grime and sweat on the skin leading to skin infections. Other skin rejuvenation procedures like lasers and peels should be started in the late 20s and anti ageing treatments like HIFU and microneedling can be started in early 30s.

They are largely safe when administered by a qualified dermatologist. As with every other medical procedures, there may be risk(s) associated with these too. However, the type and degree of associated risk(s) depends on the area and concern being treated, the treatment itself, the patient’s medical history, etc., and is more often than not, negligible.
